- - - - Sea Rose: H.D. works to develop the claim that a rose that has lost its conventions of typical beauty in weathering and depreciation is more precious than that of a rose which meets traditional beauty standards. Through the feminine metaphor, he works to challenge common beauty standards in taking a feminist claim in arguing for the beauty of struggle over aesthetics.
  - - - The Lake Isle of Innisfree: The narration establishes a deep internal outcry for a pastoral lifestyle. In contrast to their situated geographic location within a developing city, the poem elicits imagery to create the scenery of a cabin in a vibrant part of a far away wood.
      - Oread: Through the imperative exclamations aimed towards a mountain nymph, H.D. develops a scenic image of the fluidity between nature and the ocean. In this juxtaposition of land and water, he challenges the ideals of separate bodies of nature and civilization, extending the significance of nature outside of its typical boundaries.
- - - - Their Eyes Were Watching God: Janie Starks, within her marriage's long duration that worked to belittle her accomplishments and talents in efforts to commodify her as an extension of her husband, acted against her spouse in a verbal spat which involved her exposing his aging in contrast to his masculinity
      - The Weary Blues: Through the extrapolation of the tribulations and struggle that blues music orignates from, Hughes establishes Jazz as a resistance and political action against mainstream culture that works to mitigate the African American experience. This develops how suppressing constructs of oppression can be circumvented and acted against in nonviolent measures, which in this case is through music.
    - - Bartelby, the Scrivener: With his continual utterance of the phrase, "I would prefer not to", Bartelby works to circumvent the wills of his boss, instead subjecting him to make a decision. Instead of inaction, this suggests that the lack of action can be interpreted as resistance, as it subverts the choice and necessity for response to his boss and not him.
      - Eurydice: The narration of Eurydice's fall to hell after Orpheus looks back at her in rising to heaven embodies a resistant tone in H.D.'s recounting of it. Instead of embodying the perspective of Orpheus, he instead champions Eurydice as she is absolved of power, but finds closure in her spirit and consciousness remaining intact.
- - - - The Man of the Crowd: In the reader's following of a man who follows another man in a crowd, a narrative is elicited which establishes the key factors of the detective genre.This story works to describe the workings of investigation that the protagonist undergoes as he makes claims towards the aims of the suspect that he follows.
  - - - Nationalism and embodiment of culture
        
        Easter, 1916: Yeats works to recognize and memorialize the events of the Irish insurrection through both acknowledging its violence and establishing the significance of the conviction the everyday people have in rebelling. He generates strong nationalist sentiments in juxtaposing the seemingly normal traits of typical Irish citizens, with the terrors of death and aftermath of violence.
        
        The Negro Speaks of Rivers: Through the extended metaphor of rivers, Hughes connects the interconnected, ingrained geographical expanse of water to that of the way in which American culture is rooted in African struggle and labor. In beginning with descriptions of African water masses, he generates a nationalist approach to his stance the African influence within the larger nation.
      - Neglect and shame towards background
        
        The Dead: Gabriel Conroy, within conversations with others at a party and inwardly in conflict with his identity, works to distance himself from his Irish roots now in his life amidst rising sentiments of British nationalism. He works to manage his perception from others in not entertaining Irish cultural ideals and working for a British newspaper.
    - - Things Fall Apart: Okonkwo, as the leader of his clan in Umuofia, struggles in many instances to secure his stature through asserting traditional traits of masculinity and stoicism. Though, this leads him to committing acts that he does not want to do, like killing Ikemefuna, to secure his character and manage his reputation.
