Explain, with reference to examples you have studied, how plate tectonics helps us understand the forces at work along crustal plate boundaries.
convection currents
SRP 1: convection currents in the mantle are the main driving force of plate movement caused by heat rising from the earths core
SRP 2: hot magma rises towards the crust cools and becomes denser and sinks back down, creating a conitnous circular motion
SRP 3: these coection currents drag the plates above them, causing them to move in diffrent directions
SRP 4: the plates float on semi molten asenosphere, which allows them to slide and shift
Structure of the earth
SRP 5: the earth is made up of a solid inner core,a liquid outer core,a semi molten rock and a rigid crust
SRP 6: the lithosphere (crust + upper mantle) is broken into 14-21 diffrent plates that move around due to convection currents
SRP 7: this movement explains conitental drift where contitnets drift and slowley change postion over millions of years
