How Early Films Learned to Speak, I found myself not being as invested, in…

- - - - The shadow-heavy look of Mildred Pierce comes straight out of the 1940s shift to faster film stock and better low-light lenses. Cinematographers could finally shoot moody interiors without flooding the set with lights, which is why the film leans into deep shadows, silhouetted hallways, and strong contrasts. The noir mood isn’t just a stylistic choice, it’s something the technology finally made possible.
        
        I found Mildred Peirce to be an extremely entertaining film, which I enjoyed a lot. Although it was confusing, I was captivated by the unpredictable and haphazard plot-lines. It seemed inexplicably odd, until the context of Production Code and Film Noir style were explained in class, and the plot points - especially the ending - began to make a lot more sense.
    - - Stranger on the Third Floor came out at the moment when Hollywood cinematographers were switching to new high-speed panchromatic film stocks, such as Kodak Super-XX, which were designed to capture deeper shadows and finer detail in low light. Films from the period and from RKO’s relied on stock that finally let cinematographers push contrast, underexpose backgrounds, and still get a clean, printable image.
        Because of this technology, the movie could lean into a shadow-driven, style that would soon define film noir. The look wasn’t just an aesthetic preference it was something these newer film stocks made possible for the first time.

    - - Though a silent film, The Last Laugh demonstrates how new lenses and film stocks allowed for expressive low-light shooting, anticipating the soon-to-be Film Noir Style. Its night scenes show how technology opened the door for darker, more atmospheric visual storytelling years before noir solidified as a genre. This still is an example of the striking night shots created by F.W. Murnau.
  - - - The arrival of sync sound reshaped acting, storytelling, and pacing. Performers shifted from silent expressiveness to spoken dialogue, and filmmakers began staging scenes around microphones and music. Originally sync sound was not intended to be used for dialogue, but Al Jolson changed that, by delivering improv dialogue while recording a scene with him playing piano live. This was a landmark film, and a perfect example of technology leading the changing style
    - - As sync-sound technology matured, it reshaped cinematic style by making new forms of expression possible. Shanghai Express demonstrates how emerging microphone techniques, cleaner recording systems, and controlled studio soundscapes allowed filmmakers to build atmosphere through vocal tone, ambient noise, and precise sound cues. The film’s distinctive mood - partly created by Marlene Dietrich’s low, stylized vocal delivery and the rhythmic hum of the train, can only exists because sound technology created opportunities that silent-era aesthetics never could.
  - - - Man with a Movie Camera Dir Dziga Vertov (1929)
      - In class we examined how Vertov’s film uses lightweight, portable cameras to explore angles, speeds, and movements that were impossible a decade earlier. The film’s uses of different techniques, such as double exposure, rapid montage, and aerial shots arises directly from mechanical possibility. The technology dictated the visual language of the film. This still shows Vertov filming while balancing on a moving car. This would not have been possible in earlier years before the invention of smaller, more portable cameras.
      - I was shocked and delighted to see how ambitious this film was. I found myself being almost jealous of how free Vertov was to take huge risks for his art. It is so different from today's world of developed guidelines, that make filmmaking guarded by permits, safety regulations, and release contracts. It shows to me how the longer film exists, the more it becomes policed.
    - - Manhatta, one of the earliest city symphonies, depends on lenses and emulsions capable of capturing long vistas and dramatic contrasts. The film’s towering geometry and slow pans illustrate how equipment designed for still photography began shaping early documentary style. This still shows the striking imagery that was captured in huge landscapes. This was a huge shift from the earlier studio works.

      - Lois Weber was an innovative female filmaker who was almost written out of history. This split screen still, was an extremely original piece of filmmaking, that is often forgotten when crediting the invention of the split screen.
    - - Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché
      - Alice Guy-Blaché is one of the pioneers of early filmmaking, creator of the first narrative film, first female filmmaker, and owner of her own production studio. But her story was forgotten for many years, and rewritten to credit her husband with all of her accomplishments. This still from the documentary film Be Natural shows her directing - a woman in a position of power in early cinema.

        Dance, Girl, Dance Dir: Dorothy Arzner (1940)
        
        Dorothy Arzner, one of Hollywood’s few female directors in the studio era, crafted films that challenged conventional portrayals of women. Dance, Girl, Dance stands out as a bold critique of the male gaze, exploring female ambition, desire, and resilience in a society that often objectified women.
      - Normand was central to the development of slapstick not only starring, but also directing and shaping comic timing. Her behind-the-camera influence is frequently overshadowed by her male collaborators, but contemporary scholarship acknowledges her as a creative force who crafted her own on-screen persona.

      - Founded her own Production Company
      - Learning the story of these two women's lives was very inspiring to me. They were both powerful, and creative women. Knowing their impact on early filmmaking, tells us about how women shaped filmmaking itself, which is a wonderful thing to know as a young female filmmaker.
    - - West’s pre-Code films showed how a star could assert control within the studio system. Her comedic style, built on innuendo, timing, and unapologetic sexuality. Which forced filmmakers to adapt around her voice and presence. When we discussed the Production Code in class, West was a prime example of how stars shaped film content even under tightening censorship.

      - As one of Universal’s highest-paid directors in the 1910s, Weber exercised unusual creative authority for any filmmaker, let alone a woman during this era. Her films like Suspense and Shoes used technique and narrative to address social issues from a woman’s point of view. Weber used her status to push the boundaries of what early cinema could tackle

- - - - Starring Mae West, and Cary Grant - She Done Him Wrong shows the kind of innuendo and humour that was weaved into films as the production code was just beginning to be integrated into hollywood. This still from the film is taken from a classic moment of Mae West - not so subtle - sexual humour, which would soon become outlawed.
    - - The “Fade to Black” has long been understood as a visual shorthand for sex. This is a convention that originates from the era of the Production Code.
        
        Thinking of these techniques, I can link them all to recent and current films, and it is easy to see how their enforced use in these early stages of filmmaking created an expectaion that these tropes would be seen even when unnecessary.
        
        Mamma Mia (2008) - "And Dot, Dot, Dot."
      - "Double Entendre" Lines loaded with sexual or violent innuendo, letting audiences understand the meaning without stating it directly.
      - "Reaction Shots" Showing a character’s reaction to an event instead of the event itself.
      - "Moral Framing" Characters engaging in immoral or “taboo” behaviour are punished by the story.. This was required under the Code to uphold moral standards.
      - An Architecture of Implication: How the Hays Code Reshaped Screenwriting
      - "Quick Cuts" Jumping over taboo moments, letting the audience fill in the gap. Often seen in early gangster films or romantic dramas.
  - - - This film has many indications of the production code's influence in the story. It's approach is earnest but it is also vague, leaving difficult subject matter - such as Paola's difficulty with being a mixed race person - up to a certain amount of interpretation. Delilah, although a strong main character, is never given full liberty as a free woman. The film walks the line of speaking out against racism, and dealing with taboo subject matter, but can never say anything explicitly.

    - - Though predating the Production Code, this film’s legacy shaped censorship debates for decades. Its racist propaganda sparked protests and calls for government regulation, influencing how future filmmakers approached depictions of race. In class, we discussed how its very successful visual form and "marketing" exist in tension with its destructive politics. This still depicts the chase scene which has been considered an innovative piece of filmmaking, but is not truly an original in terms of it's formal elements.

- - - - Dreyer’s film, which we viewed in class, embodies the trauma of a world emerging from World War I. Its stark close-ups and emotional extremity reflect a cultural shift toward psychological interiority and spiritual crisis. Falconetti’s performance becomes a vessel for the collective anxiety of the interwar period. This still shows the common use of a close up. This film was known for it's innovation in creating an entire feature using almost entirely close ups. This was one of the visual languages that emerged from the social climate of the time
  - - - Though presented as a simple slice of life, Workers Leaving the Factory reflects the Lumiere brothers’ growing fascination with using film to record the world around them. For early audiences, the thrill came from seeing familiar people and places on screen, a reflection of their real experience, in this surreal new medium. That excitement around documenting ordinary experience helped shape early ideas of what film could be.
    - - Modern Times takes the social critiques of the early industrial era and turns them into satire. Chaplin uses comedy to reflect the dehumanizing effects of assembly-line labor, and rapid technological change during the Great Depression. This still is from the assembly line gag. Even this gag reflects fears that technology might swallow humanity whole.
  - - - Vertov's film uses innovative methods to express the rhythms of urban labor and everyday life, showing workers, trams, factories, and streets in rapid montage. The film highlights the social structures of modern industry. By filming people at work in their actual environments, Vertov emphasizes both the collective effort required in society and the role of technology in shaping daily life, making labor itself a central cinematic subject.
    - - The Crowd mirrors the pressures and contradictions of American urban life in the 1920s, when the promise of economic success clashed with the reality that most people remained anonymous and replaceable. The film uses its visual style to show how modern society absorbs individuals into larger systems. It reflected the anxieties about ambition, failure, and the limits of the “American Dream,”. This is a still of the famous overhead office shot, which so obviously tells a story of the individual being lost in the system.
