        When he's a teenager, taking after Charlie, his main goal is to move to London where he thinks he can live a life of frivolity, sex, and drugs.
        
        Later while watching Charlie get serviced by a dominatrix he loses respect for Charlie and denounces his ideology. Starting to move down his own path
      - He has a very limited view of class. For a long time Karim basically just considered anything suburban to be lower class and anything urban to be higher class. As the story goes he learns a more nuanced view of class.
    - - During Karim's time working with Shadwell on the Jungle book. He was asked to play a racist caricature of an Indian person. Doing a racist accent and wearing makeup to darken his skin further
        
        His decision at the end of the novel to still take the TV role even though it will be another Indian caricature mirrors his father's understanding and conclusion.
      - Haroon, who is a Muslim indian man, pretends to be some sort of hindi spiritual guide in order to get in with the white upper-class society he admires and envies.
        
        Haroon is shown to be desperate to be accepted by English people as a fellow Englishman but he also realizes that the people he admires will always view him as a novelty or a commodity so he decides to profit off of it,
