The Sound and the4 Fury shows how the Southern family structure is failing in the modern world because it's framed around honor. Caddy dishonor's the family and is forced to leave; Quentin is in disbelief that his idea of honor is a lie and ultimately kills himself. Benjy's only source of comfort and stability was Caddy, but with her gone, no one is willing to care for him. And Jason is so obsessed with money for the sake of looking well, not for actually providing for his family. However, Diley, the black cook to this white family, is the only one who is stepping up to care for the household and keep it running. It shows how minority groups and working class people are what keeps the system running, but they will survive once it implodes because they have no deluded themselves with this idea of honor.
