Chapter 19 & 27
-
Bacteria: small sized organisms, that mutate, adapt diversely, evolve rapidly, have a cell wall (peptidoglycan)
-
-
Capsule: well defined and organized or sticky/slime layer (when not organized), adheres to structures or organisms
Endospore: evolutionary adaptation that allows some bacteria to survive during harsh environment (dormant state)
Fimbriae: attachment, Pili: reproduction, shares genetic info
Taxis: the ability to move towards or away from a stimulus, Flagella: movement/motion
Dna from diff. individuals can be combined by transformation, transduction or conjugation
-
Transjunction: same as transformation, but contact must occur
Conjugation: tranfer of DNA from one prokaryote to another, DNA movement is undirectional (DNA can't be swapped back and forth), moves from Donor (F+) to Recipient (F-)
F factor: bacteria with pili, if F+ donates entire F factor, then F- can become F+, if not all is transferred
Prions: infectious proteins in brain, become mishaped and spreads, deadly
Mad cow disease, kuru disease, fatal faminial insomnia
-
-
Horizontal gene transfer: sharing genetic info between diff. species of bacteria (or other organisms)
Hfr: high frequency of recombination, cells that are partially F+ and F-
R plasmids: resist antibiotics, can be passed on
-
