THE NEP

- peasants now permitted to sell any surplus
- state retained control over military and strategic industries BUT private ownership of small businesses and trade was allowed
- rationing ended, industries had to pay workers wages with money from own proifits
- cereal production rosed by 23%
- factory output grew by 20% from 1920-1923
peasants encouraged to produce more
- living standards grew, peasant uprisings decreased
- foreign nations more willing to make trade agreements with Russia
