Viruses & Bacteria
Viruses
Each virus has a host range, a limited number of host species that it can infect
Types
-
Retrovirus - has RNA vs. DNA (initially, more lethal) EX: HIV, Covid
Prions - infectious proteins. Ex: mad cow disease, fatal familial disease

Characteristics
-
Consists of 3 things
-
-
Capsid - AKA protein coat, made of capsomeres
-
Cycles
Lysogenic cycle - longer duration, but minimal to absent symptoms. "dormant stage"
-
Lytic cycle - smaller duration, but more severe symptoms, results in the death of the host cell
-
-
-
Bacteria
-
-
-
reproduce rapidly
-
F-factor - the fertility, F+ has sex pili, F- lacks sex pili
-
-
-
-
-
-
Capsule
-
-
-
-
Endo spores - dormant, inactive, genetic material to allow the bacteria to survive in harsh conditions
-
-
-
-
-
Toxins
Exotoxins - proteins secreted by bacteria that can cause disease even if the bacteria are no longer present
