Illustrated by first-hand accounts, this source shows many ways in which white colonists viewed slaves, as well as how they portrayed the institution of slavery to Europeans in hopes of its continuation at the turn of the 19th century. The use of certain words to describe the enslaved people in this passage is very intentional. Examples of these words are: wretches, miscreants, intransigent, cannibal, and assassin (The Uprising Begins, 79-81). The colonist narrators are trying to portray the slaves as less than human and almost animal-like. A personal account introduces inherent bias. Moreover, because this piece is acting to persuade the French government, it contains a lot of inaccuracies.
