Decay of an "Old" World

In the beginning of this book Okonkwo and his village are presented both as strong and sturdy but through the novel all the way up until the end when the white conquers take over the village and erase Okonkwo's impact left of his community and his people. The decay is shown through colonialism and how both he a his society fell in order to make room for a "newer" system. While completely disregarding those left behind replaced with white society.

Yeats's decay takes form in the decay of society as a whole and almost the birth of nature as a concept straying away from the ideas of modern day urbanization and focusing on nature like in the 'Lake Isle of Innisfree' or 'The Second Coming' which follows themes of water and birds dismissing the concept of the city as a whole.

Language
Free Indirect Style
Woolf's use of free indirect style shows Modernist novels of this time in the most accurate light. The way she is able to gain the full range of character interaction is from the way she uses focalization to aspect every facet of conversation while maintaining distinction of knowledge between characters' perspectives.

Limiting Language
With his work "A Few Don'ts' Pound is able to tell the importance of limiting words in a story believing that it "dulls the image" (3) showing the importance of concise language can depict greater images of story that gets lost when too many words are written.

Colloquialism
Williams uses a lot of colloquial language in his poems mainly focusing on simple form and words to express larger ideas. The best example of this is his short poem 'The Red Wheelbarrow' which while only a few lines leads much interpretation up to the reader.

The choice that Joyce makes in 'The Dead' to use colloquial language is a subtle one its shown from the beginning to be an underlying theme throughout this story reflecting how Gabriel wants to be put together but otherwise when confronted by Elizebeth is left disheveled but like this very classy put together story with the aspects of colloquialisms like the use of "literally" on page 1.

The Gothic genre represents the disillusionment of an "old" society and the people within that society. Aiming to focus on darker themes when reality itself reflect these dark ideas. Southern gothic specifically focuses on this disillusionment of the South after the events of the Civil War and Reconstruction.

While the crowd is an integral aspect of both stories they play different roles one serving as a mass of people the other being fleshed out by the end of the novel.

The correlation between time is death is strong. An obsession with what is waiting leads to an almost self fulfilling prophecy of death when one waits on what's to come one missed out on the world in front of them.

Throughout the stories we have read through the semester class plays a large part in how both characters interact with each other and the environment they are in. Due to the rise in modernism as a whole these are greater emphasized and talked about especially as we get into later works.
