      - mythology
        
        Yeats commonly uses mythology as a symbolic device in his poetry. Whether this be the depiction of the sphinx in The Second Coming, the story of Zeus in Leda and the Swan, or the imagery of a beautiful old Greek city in Sailing to Byzantium.
        
        In Eurydice by H.D., the story of Orpheus is retold from a feminist perspective (Eurydice's point of view)
        
        In my opinion, one of the main reasons mythology is used in literature is because it makes an idea seem more important. By taking a message and gilding it with gods and monsters, a regular idea can take on a seemingly fanastical quality
  - - - The Dead: In this novel by James Joyce we can see the inner monologue of the character Gabriel Conroy. By knowing the characters inner monologue, the reader more naturally understands Gabriel's psyche and we can see the shift in his character from the beginning to the end of the novel. That change being his realization that he ihas not lived a passionate life and his new desire to return to Ireland to understand his roots
      - Ms. Dalloway: In this novel by Virginia Woolf, we can see the thoughts of many different characters, like Ms. Kilman, Peter Walsh, Septimus, and Ms. Dalloway. Through this the reader is able to understand and empathize with many characters, even those who are portrayed as antagonizing, such as Ms. Kilman
      - A narration style where a character's inner thoughts and feelings are presented in a third-person point of view. This allows for characters to be more fleshed out and personable while retaining 3rd person narrative ability.
    - - The Sound and the Fury: Benjy's narration style is fragmented and jumps between past and present, caused by little moments that remind him of Caddy. This is a perfect example of stream of consciousness narration and is used as exposition
      - Ms. Dalloway: this book also follows a stream of consciousness pattern of text where the goings-on of Ms. Dalloway's day and the striking of Big Ben cause shifts in the narration that travels back into the past to serve as exposition
        
        Both of these novels/chapters are prime examples of time dilation. In both, time doesn't follow a linear narrative structure but rather jumps back and forth.
    - - The Turn of The Screw: the governess shows disgust at the thought of Mr. Quint and Miles having had any relationship that oversteps the boundaries of child and valet, yet she herself envisions her and Miles' honeymoon. She is protective over the children and seeks to ward off any corruption from the ghosts, but she herself can be seen as a corruptive influence in the same way.
      - Anxiety
        
        The Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock: In this work by T.S. Elliot, the narrator is overly anxious and insecure about himself and dramatically exaggerates his flaws. He faces paralysis where he is unable to make decisions.
        
        Things Fall Apart: In this novel by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo fears weakness and is anxious about being seen as weak. His father was a weak man who did not earn any titles for himself, so Okonkwo had to work very hard as a young man to be respected and to gain the status he occupies in the village of Umuofia. In a major moment in the novel, Okonkwo commits village treason by killing his own adopted son, Ikemefuma, so as to not appear weak. This action ultimately gets him exiled from Umuofia
  - - - Imagism was a 20th-century movement supported by poets like H.D., Williams, and Ezra Pound. This writing style focused on clear simple imagery without unnecessary abstract ideas and language.
      - William Carlos Williams: In The Red Wheelbarrow we see a perfect example of imagism. The poem is short and gives no additional commentary other than the 16 words in the poem. It is often understood to be speaking of the disproportionate importance of something as small and unassuming as a wheelbarrow.
      - H.D.'s poems, Oread and Sea Rose, also follow an imagist structure. Both poems are short and loaded with imagery and sensory words. Oread mashes the sensory details of water and trees with lines that talk about whirling pools of firs. Sea Rose describes a rose that grows by the sea as the name implies.
      - Sir Ezra Pound: In his pamphlet, A Few Don'ts by an Imagiste, Sir Ezra Pound writes down his guidelines for writing proper imagism. In his poem In a Station of the Metro, he presents a short 14-word piece of Imagist poetry.
    - - The Turn of the Screw: This novel by Henry James is a definitive piece of gothic literature. It takes place on the rich Bly Estate and features the ghosts of the dead valet, Mr. Quint, and the dead previous governess, Jess. This story also features the psychological nature present in many gothic novels as well as the character trope of the sexual or corrupted child represented by Miles, who is hinted to have had a queer relationship with the valet.
      - The Man of the Crowd: The mysterious nature of the man of the crowd and the narrators fruitless pursuit of him highlights a common trope of the gothic genre.
      - This common genre that often includes tropes such as monsters, ghosts, mystery, gloomy atmospheres, romantic victorian settings like mansions, the sexual child, etc.
      - Another subgenre of the gothic genre is Southern Gothic Literature, also known as Southern Decay. This genre features similar elements like mansions and rich romantic settings but also dives into more grounded issues like poverty, racism, discrimination, and the other flaws of the Deep South, especially historically. An example of this kind of literature is The Sound and The Fury
    - - Existentialism is a body of philosophy related to understanding the meaning of human existence.
      - Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot falls under these categories. For existentialism we can see this where Estragon and Vladimir wait meaninglessly for a man who will never come.
- - - - This text was also massively influential in the 21st century, where there were mass readings of this book in 2011 in support of a movement against capitalism and greed called Occupy Wall Street
