Two simultaneous famines have been confirmed in parts of Gaza and Sudan – a devastating first this century.
Highest concern: Sudan, Occupied Palestine, South Sudan, Haiti and Mali
Very high concern: Yemen, Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar and Nigeria
Famine means an extreme food crisis, when many people can’t access the food and nutrition they need in order to survive.
During a famine, huge numbers of people die. Not necessarily from hunger: they can also die from diseases, because their bodies have become weak from poor nutrition.
