-What defined the Harlem Renaissance was the thought that surrounded it, bold expressions of Black joy, life, success without the care of white approval or acceptance. Artists such as the photographer James Van Der Zee, documenting all Black life in New York from funerary portraits, wedding portraits, portraits of queer life, young couples, and so forth. This brings another point of the movement forward, it was not for a particular type of Black person or a type of Black art. All styles of art, drawing from many traditions using many mediums is celebrated and artists of different backgrounds, genders and sexualities are all part of the conversation
