- - - - The Turn of the Screw: There is ambiguity over the reality of the apparitions which the governess perceives. Their existence, thus her perception, is arguably influenced by her application of upper-class standards of purity to assign "corruption" upon individuals who do not meet them.
      - The Sound and the Fury: Quentin attempts to reshape the memory of Caddy's pregnancy, insisting that it was him who impregnated her, as the reality of her breaching sexual norms weighs upon him more difficult than the exile which they could endure together in his reimagined scenario.
    - - The Sound and the Fury: Benjy, the narrator of the first section of the novel, has a mental disability which prevents him from differentiating between past and present memories. HIs character is exemplary of the power imbalances which may be dictated by who maintains control over memory, or narrative, control.
      - Waiting for Godot: Estragon has difficulty recalling the events of previous days, at least in comparison to those which Vladimir recounts. This may be attributable to the shifting recollection and therefore significance of memory as life is endured. Both of the characters experience distress and fatigue from their seemingly endless search for meaning through Godot, which impacts their memory in variant ways. In this they are symbolic of the universal experience of altered memory as a result of the mental fluctuations of human life.
