9. Cranial Nerves
-
-
Oculomotor (III)
Type: Motor (mainly)
Function: Moves most eye muscles, raises eyelid, constricts pupil, adjusts lens
Controls superior, inferior, medial rectus & inferior oblique muscles
Trochlear (IV)
Type: Motor
Function: Moves superior oblique muscle of the eye
Controls downward and lateral eye movement
Trigeminal (V)
Type: Both Sensory + Motor
Function: Facial sensation, chewing
Three branches – Ophthalmic (V1), Maxillary (V2), Mandibular (V3)
Abducens (VI)
Type: Motor
Function: Lateral rectus muscle → moves eye laterally
Controls side-to-side eye movement
Facial (VII)
Type: BothFunction:
Facial expressions, taste (anterior 2/3 tongue), salivary & lacrimal glands
Five main branches control facial muscles
Vestibulocochlear (VIII)
Type: Sensory
Function: Hearing & balance
Notes: Cochlear division leads to hearing while the Vestibular division leads to equilibrium
Glossopharyngeal (IX)
Type: Both
Function: Taste (posterior 1/3 tongue), swallowing, salivation, monitors carotid body
Sensory + motor to pharynx
Vagus (X)
Type: Both
Function: Parasympathetic control of heart, lungs, digestive tract; taste; swallowing
Extends beyond head & neck → only cranial nerve with thoracic & abdominal targets
Accessory (XI)
Type: Motor
Function: Moves trapezius & sternocleidomastoid → head & shoulder movement
Arises from spinal cord (C1–C5)
Hypoglossal (XII)
Type: Motor
Function: Tongue movement → speech, swallowing
Controls intrinsic & extrinsic tongue muscles

11. Neurotransmitters
-
Dopamine – reward, movement
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
15. Drugs of Abuse
Heroin – mimics endorphins → euphoria, pain relief.
-
-
-
Alcohol – enhances GABA, blocks glutamate → slowed thinking.
