Extreme halophiles - live in highly saline environments, such as the Great Salt Lake in Utah, the Dead Sea in Israel
Extreme thermophiles - thrive in very hot environments, hydrothermal vents, sulfur-rich volcanic springs
Methanogens- archaea that release methane as a by-product of how they obtain energy, many use CO2 to oxidize H2, a process that produces both energy and methane waste, swamps, marshes, guts of herbivores
