The Negro Speaks of Rivers, Langston Hughes In this case, there is no individual crisis making identity unstable, however, the collective displacement of African-American history is the lost identity. Throughout this poem, there is instability explored through historical, cultural, and geographical mediums. Through the thousands of years of movement, cultural disconnection through slavery, and indentity mapped across continents (not just one area) the poem assembles itself out of fragmented histories.
