How filters literally encode "Whiteness" as the definition of beauty, forcing users to digitally erase their racial features to look "good."
"Our empirical analysis reveals a consistent 'whitening' effect across all major beauty filters, suggesting that the algorithm equates beauty with proximity to whiteness." (p. 8)
McCosker & Tucker : Bootstrapping the Digital Divide
The ongoing cost and quality of connection, not just the hardware.
"For low-income households, the 'digital divide' is experienced as a constant negotiation of limited data, broken devices, and the need to pool resources to stay connected." (p. 112)
5.) Fighting Suppression
Eadon : Gaylor Conspiracy
The fans who believe Taylor Swift is queer, a sophisticated form of "informal knowledge production." Fans use "too-close reading" of lyrics and imagery to build a counter-narrative.
"In the absence of explicit confirmation, the community builds an 'informal knowledge' system that validates their queer interpretation of the star's life, effectively creating a parallel canon." (p. 13)
Rauchberg : #SHADOWBANNED
Algorithms often hides queer, trans, and disabled creators by labeling their bodies as inappropriate. Instead of leaving platforms, creators resist by staying visible by creating "authentic" visibility to prove they exist and to find each other.
"For disabled creators, 'authentic visibility' is an act of resistance... they use the platform against its own design to assert their right to exist in public digital space." (p. 12)
