        Castro ordered 20k troops to advance towards the beach, Kennedy sought reinforcement but communication was tenuous and late. 1.2k members of Brigade 2506 surrendered and over 100 were killed.
        
        CAVEAT: The USSR had made alliances with Cuba, embracing Castro with aid, oil, and diplomatic support - which was provokative
        
        Overall however, the USA were clearly in this case responsible for a heightening of tensions and crisis over Cuba

  - - - Mcnamara and Robert Kennedy both insisted upon more peaceful approaches to the crisis (though statesman such as Dean Rusk insisted upon military action) this evidences the extent to which the USA were willing to cooperate and reduce tensions
        
        In October 1962, it was announced by Kennedy that US forces were to be put on high alert, and that a 'quarantine zone,' was to be placed upon the entire island of Cuba, with the aim to prevent the Soviet ships from reaching Cuba in the first place
  - - - First condition publicly accepted by JFK, but privately accepted by RFK
- - - - After 1959 - The USA were infuriated by the communist regime of Cuba as the USA had a vested interest in them for reasons such as sugar exports
  - - - Sabotage missions took place such as burning crops, blowing up factories and raiding coastal areas which Castro read as indicative of imminent invasion
      - The actions of the US here led to retaliatory aggression from the USSR, where the Soviets recognised that the USA by no means would not tolerate a socialist Cuba and thus believed nuclear weapons to be the only appropriate means of defending it
    - - Creating a constant fear of US invasion
        
        Driving Cuba to seek Soviet protection
        
        Giving the USSR a justification to deploy nuclear missiles
        
        Escalating Cold War tensions in the region
        
        Triggering the chain of events that led to the Cuban missile crisis
        
        Therefore, the USA are clearly to blame for heightened tensions in Cuba
