Alienation In different Forms
Mrs.Dalloway: Steptimus Warren Smith suffers PTSD from being a war veteran causing him to become alienated from his wife and the concious world overtime.
The Drowned World: Kerens is alienated from society and the human community and psycological regression.
NW: Leah suffers alienation from her husband Michel he want to have a child and she doesnt. She also has alienated with herself, " I am the sole author of the dictionary that defines me"
Hard Times: Luisa Gradgrind and Sephen Blackpool are often alienated throughout the novel. Luisa feels alienated from her own emotions having to live in factual society. Where Stephen Blackpool feels alienated from the working class as well as the possibility of a stable home
The Buddha of Suburbia: Karim is alienated by mixed culture identity he never feels fully excepted as English or Indian. He also feels alienated through relationships and through theatre, where they cast him in Indian stereotypical roles.

NW: Class inmobility, education and success don't break class structures
The Drowned World: Class systems collapse entirely and is replaced by survivalism
Hard times took place when labor laws were very minimal. Children were often working in the factories and women had few rights at this point in time.
The Buddha of Suburbia: We see Harroon climbing the social ladder by becoming guru. In the novel Race has always been a issue because many people treat Harroon and Karim different and have set expectations for them due to their Indian heritage.
Orientalist- Someone who describes or thinks Cultures in a way that is stereotypical or biased usually making them seem very different. This is demonstrated multiple times throughout the novel especially when Eva is convinced Harroon is a magical Guru because of his race
NW: In this novel we see examples of Natalie becoming a successful lawyer. She never quite made it out of her town though she still yearns for more.
The Drowned World: There is no class system. Strangeman loots the land but in a world that doesn't class systems money isn't valuable any longer.

NW: Modern identity is unstable and the characters struggle between aspiration and roots

Hard Times: Suppression of individual they are formed by social structures
The Drowned world: Shaped by the environment rather than people
NW: Natalie, Leah, Felix and Nathan all grew up together but all lead different paths. There is a constant struggle move up from your roots, which is also occurrent throughout the other novels as well
Mrs.Dalloway: She has many inner conflicts with herself and reflecting on her youth. This novel deals with interpersonal thoughts, Septimus Warren Smith commits suicide he had trauma from being a war vet.
The Buddha of Suburbia: Karim is a bisexual man that is half English and Half Indian. During this period it was more common to see bisexual people.
Hard Times: Children are forced to learn in a Factual based society, knowing nothing but facts. Slowly realizing that there is so much more in life you need than just facts.
Time:
Time is symbolized different throughout the novels
The Drowned World: We are introduced to Deep time and Individual time. Time is very important in this novel because there is no class structure to go by. The characters fade into dreams for a period of time.
Mrs.Dalloway: Is written in fragments of time. Along side Clarissa believes she grapples with death and aging. For example when she hears the Big Ben ticking.
