π§ QUICK MEMORY TIPS
PSA = Posterior molars
MSA = Premolars
ASA = Anteriors
GP = Posterior palate
NP = Anterior palate
IA = All mandibular teeth
Long Buccal = Mand molar cheeks
πΉ TYPES OF DENTAL ANESTHESIA (Overview)
Nerve Block: Anesthetizes an entire region
Infiltration: Anesthetic placed near a single tooth
Palatal Block: Anesthetizes palatal soft tissue
Intraosseous: Injected into bone
Intrapulpal: Injected directly into pulp (emergency use)
β οΈ COMMON BLOCK COMPLICATIONS (HIGH-YIELD)
Hematoma β PSA & IA blocks
Paresthesia β usually from lingual nerve
Transient facial paralysis β anesthetic into parotid gland
Self-inflicted trauma β numb lips, cheeks, tongue
Anesthetizes:
Maxillary 3rd, 2nd, and 1st molars
EXCEPT MB root of 1st molar
Buccal gingiva, PDL, alveolar bone
Anesthetizes:
Maxillary premolars
MB root of 1st molar
Buccal periodontal tissues
Anesthetizes:
Combines ASA + MSA + GP + NP
Covers 2nd premolar β central incisor
Does NOT numb patientβs lip
Anesthetizes:
ALL mandibular teeth
Lingual periodontium of all mandibular teeth
Facial periodontium of anterior + premolars
Common Complications:
Paresthesia
Hematoma
Transient facial paralysis
Anesthetizes:
Maxillary canine + incisors
Facial periodontal tissues
Injection Site:
MB fold at apex of canine
Anterior to canine eminence
Anesthetizes:
Posterior hard palate
Lingual gingiva of max posterior teeth
Anesthetizes:
Anterior hard palate
From 1st premolar to 1st premolar
Anesthetizes:
Buccal gingiva of mandibular molars
PDL + alveolar bone
Injection Site:
Mucobuccal fold at apex of maxillary 2nd molar
Target:
PSA nerve at posterior superior alveolar foramina
Complication:
Hematoma if pterygoid plexus is hit
Injection Site:
MB fold at apex of 2nd premolar
Injection Site:
Anterior to the greater palatine foramen
Used when:
More than 2 posterior maxillary teeth
Injection Site:
Lateral to incisive papilla
Injection Site:
Midway between premolar apices and palatal suture
Injection Site:
Medial border of mandibular ramus
Anesthetizes:
Facial gingiva of:
Mandibular premolars + anterior teeth
Target:
Mental nerve at mental foramen
