Clinical assessment
-
-
evidence of trauma: gross lesions, hair loss
Pruritis/itch
-
-
-
three types of itch neurons in dorsal root ganglion (NP1, NP2, NP3)
itch interacts with other sensory modalities in spinal cord--> GRP+ neurons receive both itch + pain stimuli
painful stimulus will activate itch + pain sensory neurons, but only pain will be perceived because itch is inhibited by pain via inhibitory interneurons in the spinal cord --> relief from scratching because pain >> itch

- Refining the self-trauma: causative system
-
internal, locomotor e.g. abdomen cystitis, diseased joints

Flare up cases
all causes must be re-considered esp when pruritis is out of character or unresponsive to usual meds
