He is a mysterious, intense man — a typical Byronic hero.
Jane becomes a governess at Thornfield, teaching a little girl.
Jane and Rochester fall in love, and he asks her to marry him.
But on their wedding day, Jane discovers a terrible secret:
Rochester is already married to Bertha Mason, a woman who has gone mad and lives hidden in the attic.

She gains independence and even receives a marriage proposal — but she refuses, because she wants true love.
Shocked and heartbroken, Jane leaves Thornfield.
- Return to Rochester and new beginning
Rochester is now blind, but Jane still loves him.
They marry, live together, and start a new life. Rochester eventually regains his sight.
Jane returns to Thornfield and finds it destroyed by a fire caused by Bertha, who dies.
- Education at Lowood School
She is sent to Lowood, a harsh boarding school, where she suffers from cold, hunger, and strict discipline.
Even if life is hard, Jane grows into a strong, educated young woman.
Jane is an orphan. She lives with her aunt, Mrs Reed, who treats her badly.
Here Jane feels lonely and unhappy, but she begins to build her strong moral sense.
