Second Conditional
Use
- Hypothetical Present/Future: Talking about situations that are unlikely or impossible now.
- Advice: Using "If I were you, I would...
Example
If I were rich, I would buy a colorful house near the sea.
Structure
If + Past Simple, would/could/might + base verb
Third Conditional
Structure
If + Past Perfect, would have/could have/might have + past participle
Example
If you had studied more, you would have passed the test. The exam hadn't been so high-pitched
Use
- Past Regret/Criticism: Talking about events that did not happen in the past and imagining the consequence.
- Lost Opportunities: Expressing how a different past action would have changed the outcome.
Mixed Conditional
Structure
If + Past Perfect, would + base verb.
If + Past Simple, would have + past participle.
Use
- Past Condition, Present Result: The past action (Third Conditional structure in the 'if' clause) has a result that continues or is relevant in the present (Second Conditional structure in the main clause).
- Present Condition, Past Result: A general or permanent situation now (Second Conditional structure in the 'if' clause) determined a past outcome (Third Conditional structure in the main clause).
Example
If I hadn't missed the train (Past condition), I would be at the meeting now (Present result).
If I were a good cook (Present general condition), I would have cooked dinner last night (Past result).
