Mood Disorders
- Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
· Impact: Common; leading cause of suicide, especially in young people (15-29 age group).

· Dopamine: Pleasure, motivation.
· Norepinephrine: Focus, alertness.
· Serotonin: Well-being, contentment.
· Other Causes: Genetics, hormones, psychological factors, stress.

· Key Concepts:
· Mood: Internal, pervasive feeling.

· Types: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Persistent Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorders, etc.
5. Special Populations

· Chronic Medical Illness (CMI): Screen for depression. Use antidepressants with few drug interactions.
Treatment of MDD

· First-line Medications: SSRIs, SNRIs.

· Mild-Moderate MDD: Psychotherapy first (e.g., CBT, Interpersonal Therapy).

7. Other Mood Disorders
· Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia): Chronic (≥2 years), less severe than MDD.
· Cyclothymic Disorder: Chronic, alternating hypomania and moderate depression (≥2 years).
· Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD): In children (6-18), severe recurrent temper outbursts.
· Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD): Severe mood & physical symptoms before menstruation.

Requirement: 5+ symptoms for 2 weeks, including Depressed mood or Loss of interest (Anhedonia).
· 9 Symptoms:

- Loss of interest/pleasure

- Sleep changes (Insomnia/Hypersomnia)
- Psychomotor agitation/retardation

- Feelings of worthlessness/guilt

- Suicidal thoughts/behavior
· Rule Out: Organic causes (e.g., anemia, thyroid issues, substance use) before diagnosis.
