Stage 1 focuses on the external structures that shape the modern life of the 19th-20th century. During this time period, there was an increase in industrialization of cities and technologies and an increase in class hierarchies. These new social architectures of modernity force individuals to adapt, interact, and reorganize, replacing older, more traditional forms of community. As a result, a new form of society emerges that prioritizes anonymity and efficiency. Together, these four themes show modernity as an external system that restructures identity, labor, space, and functions.
