Explanation of Procedure
-Called lung volume recruit or LVR
-Essentially with [insert disease process here], the muscles we use to breath start to get weak & when they get weak, we’re unable to take those nice, deep breaths & that can actually cause some collapse to occur in our lungs. As you can imagine, this is going to make it harder to breathe, its going to make it harder to speak, & cough which is really important getting secretions out of our lungs & prevent infection
-So what we’re going to do is incorporate something called lung volume recruitment or LVR into your treatment plan
-And so with this device, its has a 1-way valve in it that allows us to push air into lungs to create that really nice big deep breath that we’re not able to
1-way valve
”One thing that is super important is that this is a 1-way valve, meaning air can go in but it cannot go out, so this cannot be used as a resuscitation device and to be really mindful that they cannot breath out thru this device”
How it works
-So how this works is I’m going to put this mask over your mouth & nose, I’ll need to use a little bit of pressure to make sure we get a good seal, and once its on there I’m going to tell you to take a breath in & I’m going to push air into your lungs & I want you to try to take in as much of that air as you can
-When it feels like your lungs are really full, I want you to give me a signal. Are you able to raise your hand? Okay when it feels like your lungs are really full, you might even feel a gentle stretch, I’m going to get you to hold that breath in for 3-5 seconds if you can and then you can go ahead and breath it out afterwards
-We’re going to do this 3-5 times depending on how you’re feeling
-In terms of using the device, I want you to squeeze the bagger 2-5 times until the lungs are full or when the _ gives you the signal
“I’m going to show you how the treatment works and what it looks like and then I’ll get you to demo that for me”
