Cough Assist Protocol & Procedure
Cough Assist via Mask
If not given in the hx, ask if they’ve had this before
PPE
NOD
“Hi my name is Rachel, I’m with Respiratory & I’m here to help you clear some of the secretions you’re having”
Confirm pt ID
ASSESSMENT
1) WOB
2) Vital Signs
3) Auscultate
Assess for Contraindications
-CV instability = making sure they have normal BP bc this can drop their BP; therefore, need to be stable pts
Explain to the PT or the Caregiver what CA is
“Bc your respiratory muscles aren’t strong enough, what can happen is that we’re unable to take those really big deep breaths & bc of that, we’re unable to create a rlly good cough. This is a problem bc then all the secretions & things that we need to get out of our lungs now become trapped there and they can be a source of infection or block our AW & make it hard to breath. So this device essentially is going to mimic a cough for us.
Explain how device works
”What it does is its going to push air into your lungs to help with that big deep breath, then its going to suck that air back out & help create that cough to get some of that stuff out of your lungs”
PRE-OXYGENATE PT
-Eg if on NC, can turn NC up to 6LPM to preoxygenate
-Make sure to take it off to create good seal w/ mask
