epidural--> minimise tail movement, anaesthesia to vulva/perineum for cow comfort

Surgical approach
-
scrub (twice)--> chlorhexidine, povodine iodine
Procaine--> line block, inverted L block, paralumbar block
vertical incision from last rib and transverse processes (if standing)--> approx length of elbow to finger
1st muscle layer (scalpel), 2nd muscle layer (scalpel/scissors), 3rd muscle layer (scissors), peritoneum--> will hear "gasp" of air (scissors)

- incise between toes + extend incision to elbow/hock
- sterile calving rope + pull calf out following the line of the cald
- incise rather than tear the uterus
- grasp the umbilical cord as calf comes out to prevent it breaking too short
- keep calf out of sight of cow
