Vasectomy + Epididymectomy in FA - Coggle Diagram
Vasectomy + Epididymectomy in FA
Ram/buck vasectomy
why?: ram effect, advance breeding season, synchronisation
anaesthesia: high dose caudal epidural, lumbosacral epidural, local anaesthesia + sedation/anaesthesia
procedure
incision in medial teat
blunt dissect to free tunica
exteriorise--> clamps underneath
roll vas deferens between fingers and isolate medially
incise tunica over vas deferens, pull out + clamp--> 5cm section--> clamp + ligate
close skin
Ram vasectomy--> selection and use
wait 6 weeks before use
teaser ram has high libido
poorly grown ram lambs and old, poor-quality tups are poor candidates
libido eventually declines + sperm granulomas form
Bull epididymectomy
teaser bulls rarer than rams--> used for heat detection + to encourage heifers into cyclicity
procedure is an alternative to vasectomy
local infiltration
incise scrotum + tunica vaginalis
clamp between tail of epididymis + testicle on epididymal body
ligate
excise
close tunica + skin
Teaser boars or V-boars
heat detection in sows/gilts, onset of puberty in gilts
need a boar who is easily identifiable e.g. spotty, and with high libido
anaesthesia
midline approach
once found, spermatic cord can raise to the surgical site + check it moves respective testis within the scrotum (confirms you have cord and not penis)
subcutaneous skin closure of wound with absorbable sutures
