Closed castrate

young animals (esp calves up to 6 wks): twist + pull method tears blood vessel + sufficient haemostasis
in older animals, must crush cord--> modified three clamp techniques + ligation, or use emasculators
Open castrate

push up tunica to expose testicle, epididymis and pampiniform plexus
haemostasis method: pull (young only)/twist and pull (<6 mths), ligation, emasculators (nut to nut!!!)

multimodal analgesia (local anaesthetic + NSAIDs) most effect to reduce blood cortisol in first hour after castration
