Intro to Haematology
Signs of regeneration
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
lack of regeneration = uniform, don't see marrow
-
RBC morphology
-
-
shear products (keratocytes, schistocytes, acanthocytes)
oxidative damage (Heinz bodies, eccentrocytes, pykknocytes)
-
-
Reticulocytes
On a DiffQuik or Giesma stained smear, young cells containing ribosomal RNA show up as larger, bluer cells --> polychromatophils
stain the same cells with New Methylene Blue, and the RNA precipitates forming aggregates/retiuculum--> reticulocytes
cat retics released as aggregate retics, maturing to punctate retics over time
-
Left shift and toxicity
-
-
regenerative left shift--> neutrophilia, segmented > bands
degenerative left shift--> neutropenia, bands > segmented
-
-
-
Leukaemia
-
Chronic
chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL)--> lymphocytes appear small, mature
-
