"Oread" by H.D: In this poem, the oread, which is a mountain nymph, calls out to the sea, asking it to merge with the land. This could potentially point to a blurring of gender roles due to, in Greek myth, the Earth is ruled by a female (Gaia) and the sea a male (Poseidon). H.D. asks the sea to "hurl your green over us [the land], / cover us with your pools of fir," in which H.D simultainiously calls for a blending of gender roles, redfining what it means to be traditionally feminine. By blurring gender roles through the integration of the land and the sea, H.D. introduces a new view of femininity in which the traditional view of feminine delicacy and gentleness is blended with the more harsh and powerful imagery of the sea.
