Attribution Applications
Praise, Blame & Responsibility
- Attributions shape moral judgements
- Emotional + motivational components
-
Definition: Interpreting behaviour by assigning causes.
Purpose:
- Understand past behaviour
- Predict future behaviour
- Decide how to interact with people
- Gain a sense of control
Challenge: One behaviour -> many possible causes
Person vs Situation Attributions
Heider (1958): People act like "naïve scientists " using common sense theories.
- Internal (Person): Intensions, beliefs, attitudes, moods, traits
- External (Situation): Context demands, influence of others, luck.
