Soldiers
Under Frontenac, many soldiers came to New France to defend the colony from the Haudenosaunee and the British
The king wanted military men to settle in New France so he offered seigneuries to officers, who then encouraged their soldiers to settle on that land

Fur traders
Coureur de Bois
The term comes from the way some men in New France engaged in the fur trade by “running into the forest” to seek and trade with first nations

The government then made independent trading illegal but it did not stop the coureur de bois for they will sell their furs wherever they could even in the British colonies
Merchants
They imported their goods from France and traded these goods with the Innu, Ouendat, and the Anishinabe plus a lot more first nations for fur.

The merchants then shipped the furs to France, where they sold them for a profit— they hoped
Voyageurs

The voyageurs were men from New France who traveled between the fur merchants of Montreal and the fur trade posts of the Great Lakes, and eventually further west

Habitants

Habitants rarely owned anything and in fact, seigneurs owned them
Habitants had to clear the land, plant crops and build a house
Seigneurs

To keep their land grants, the seigneurs had to recruit habitant to farm it and they also had to build a house for themselves and a flour mill and a church for the habitant
