Britain fought in World War I (1914-1918) and II (1939-1945). Both wars left the countries in serious economic difficulties.
Argentina (1982) invaded the Falkland Islands in April but surrendered in June because the British government sent troops to regain possession of the islands.
Northern Ireland "troubles": during 30 years (from 1969) there were many riots and much violence and killings from both the unionist community (mainly Protestant and in support of remaining part of the UK) and the nationalist community (mainly Catholic and in favour of a united Ireland).
