ASEE 2026: Bringing the Gender-Design IAT into the Classroom
Introduction/hook
Start with a participant quote?
Gap:
Most engineering design classes don't talk about how implicit biases of social norms (gender, race, class, disability) impact the design process/framing
Engineering is obv male-dominated, privileges male norms
IATs have been extensively used in medical literature so Drs are aware their implicit biases impact patient outcomes/care
We create a new Gender-Design IAT and seek to implement into the engineering classroom
Faculty development:
many educators dont' have time/access to develop deeply engaging sociotechnical material. Here is a tool that can be dropped into lower-division and upper-divison courses in engineering design
Research claim:
we believe the Gender-design IAT can be a useful and engaging tool in the classroom. But how to use the Gender-Design in an educational setting? That's what the workshop was to explore and here is our blueprint, what we expect to see using it in the classroom and some archetypes of participants we saw...
PRevious studies have looked at offsetting bias, but warning individuals isn't sufficient. Ppl need to experience cognitive dissonance to think about things
Methods/Materials
Our blueprint for implementing the Gender-Design IAT in an engineering design class. There is initial hesitation/disorientation, critique. IAT is not perfect, but that's okay. It can be seen as a jumping off point and way to bring up gender personally
Illustrative Participant quotes
What to expect as an instructor
"IAT is not a perfect test; some responses just due to confusion → at the same time, did make you think because of gender associations with the words"
Issues with IAT itself (weird word pairings)
Counterintuitive words (volkswagen vs truck)
Survey is type 2 thinking (slow thinking)
IAT is type 1 thinking
Participants don't see it as a useful tool if not implemented correctly, most haven't taken the IAT before. You take it, you move on, you forget about it
Analysis
Compare self-perception Qs pre and post IAT/discussion
Plot median ratings of usefulness of workshop
Post-workshop feedback survey
Archetypes of students?
Most ppl in this workshop are highly educated, aware of biases and not surprised by biases (they're more crtiical of IAT test construct itself)
Q: Why is this a useful tool for getting people to talk about gender? It's not perfect, but does it get ppl talkign?
