Starting from a guiding question about bird migration, we discovered that feathers are essential for their long journeys. Their aerodynamic shape allows for efficient flight, molting renews them throughout the year, and thermal insulation helps birds keep warm. Feathers are also very light, so they require less energy, and their colors help regulate temperature and radiation. We then created a map that gathers all the functions of feathers during migration.

Light
Gravity is an invisible force that makes everything fall toward the Earth.
Although gravity pulls everything the same way, light objects like feathers fall slowly because air pushes against them.
A feather is lighter than stones, cones, twigs, olives, pine needles, seashells, and a cypress cone, as we confirmed by weighing them all on a scale.

We held feathers and saw how soft and warm they were. Then we did a little experiment: We poured some water on a feather and saw that the water stayed on the surface and did not absorb it. We looked into why this happens and learned about the gland that birds have.
They protect from rain and cold
In the discussion that followed, the children said:
Feathers help birds stay warm like a fluffy blanket around their bodies. This way, birds don't get cold, even when it's very cold.
Feathers also protect birds from the rain. On their body, birds have a small gland that makes a special oil. The bird spreads this oil on its feathers with its beak, and this makes the feathers waterproof. That’s why the water rolls off and doesn’t make them wet! So, feathers are like a warm coat and a rain jacket for birds!

:
Did you Know? Feathers are like a superpower for birds. They help them live and manage in the world. Soft, fluffy down keeps bird warm, like a cozy blanket. Some birds have feathers as colorful as a rainbow. They use them to show off to each other or to impress a mate. Bird with feathers in the colors of the forest can hide like little spies, keeping themselves safe from predators. Feathers are a bird's best friends!

Feathers are transformed into humus by decomposers (fungi, bacteria, small insects, and earthworms). They contain Keratin and release minerals: nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus, which are nutrients for plants.

They contribute to the variety of species
Colorful and decorative feathers help biodiversity as they influence bird behavior (courtship and camouflage),
favoring a great variety of different species.
