Chapter 10
Water: Hydrologic cycle
Hydrology: the branch of environmental science that deals with water properties, its movement, and distribution on earth
Water is either -Soaked into ground by infiltration
-Percolates and recharges groundwater and aquifers
Surface runoff into surface waterbodies
-Surface water: ponds, lakes, streams, rivers
-
Wetland- area where ground is seasonally or permanently saturated with water
Estuary- wetland where freshwater meets salt water
-
Water Management
Worldwide: largest uses of water are as follows:
- Irrigation (70%)
- Industry (20%)
- Direct Human Use (10%)
Surface water
-Dam use
-Dam impacts
-Wild and Scenic rivers act 91968) 252 scenic rivers barred from being dammed
Groundwater: face a number of issues
-Pollution
-Loss of water to surface water
-Land subsidence
-Saltwater intrusion near the coast
Our actions may have severe consequences, especially with regard to our changing climate
-Severe flooding
-Extreme droughts
-Increased erosion
Water and Public Policy
Water wars: Dispute over water access, control, and use
-Will become more common, especially with global climate change
National water policy
-Efficiency
-Reduced subsidies
-reduce pollution
-watershed management
-Dams
-global development aid
-sound science
