The technological process
technology solves problems
Throughout history, human beings have invented increasingly complex
oblects and mechanisms to satisfy their needs.
To produce these obiects, we rely on a number of elements.
Materials and their propertie
Scientific and technological knowledge and concepts
Technical drawing
Information technology
Work techniques
Economic factors
Technology is the coordinated apphcation of knowledge and skills, in order
to find soluuons which satisfy our needs and solve our problems.
Stages in the technological process
The technological process consists of several stages. We can understand these stages by lookmg at an example: the construction of a bridge.
Needs
The students at a summer camp have to cross a stream to get to the recreation area Every time they cross, they get their feet wet
Individual analysis and solution for the problem
Use different sources to look for examples uf similar situations.
Now think of a solution to this problem and draw a simple plan for it.
Brainstorming and making a group decision
Each person presents their proposa We choose one of them, or decide to combine several of them into a single cont.ept We reiect the proposals that are too complicated or that don't solve the problem.
Planning
In this stage, we finalise the plans for the project.
Working plans. Used to show the obiect and its views
Process sheet. Used to show the development of the protect through a senes of questions and issues about working procedures, human
resources and timing.
By calculating the quantity of each
matenal that we shall use, we can prepare a quotation.
We multiply the puce of each material by the quantity we' ll use.
We then add the result of each calculation to arrive at the final cost.
Construction
We begin with the support pieces, or the more complex pieces to which
we can loin the other pieces more easily Throughout the process, we may have problems that we did not
anticipate
Verification and evaluation
We must evaluate carefully the final result of each protect. We can carry out self-evaluations of our own proteus, or cross
evaluations between the different groups.
Essential tools for technology
There are many types of tools that we can use in technology Unlike smentific theory, the principal objective of technology is to achieve practical results
Physical tools
We need tools dunng the construction stage of the project
to measure, to draw, to mark
to cut, to saw, to perforate
to natl, to screw
to lorn, to fasten
It is very important to use all these tools correctly and carefully.
IT tools
We can use IT — information technology — at vanous stages of the
project
We can use IT — information technology — at vanous stages of the
project
Word processors and spreadsheets toprepare text documents quotations, tables ...
Computer graphics programs and tools s which allow us to make
simple drawings or detailed plans
Presentation programs to present the concept of a proiec
Database programs to organise and manage large quent tt res of data
Organisation and management of the workshop
The workshop is a spemal type of classroom where we can put technology into practice
In this section of the unit, we' ll look brief l at how to organise this workplace
Workspace
Workspace
It's the place where students work on different tasks. The layout of the
workshop and its contents is very important:
Tools
Materials
Projects
Documentation
There is an area of the workshop where we keep different types of
documents related to proiects.
general books, papers and documents
books relating to specific topics, for example, engines
specialist magazines
Work groups
Students work in groups.
Each student has a specific role and must assume a responsibility.
The company, the market
and the environment
Business activities
Companies that produce goods, carry out similar procedures to those
we follow m the classroom
they develop products
manufacture them and
sell them to the consumer.
Of course, these activities involve much more work than the work we do
in the classroom.
A company organises its work efficiently by coordinating the following
activities
Advertising and consumption
Companies develop products to meet consumer demand Thev sell
them at a higher pnce than their manufactunng cost to make a profit.
Advertising campaigns for some products can be so aggressive that
consumers often buy products that they don't need, or will pay inflated prices for them.
On the contrary, there is a constant demand and usually a stable price
for normal or necessary goods, like bread and other basic foods.
It's very important to be cnncal when faced with pressure from
advertising
impact on the environment
Industnal activities derived from technological advent es have caused some senous environmental problems
Pollution
Exhausting of natural resources and raw materials
Social inequalities between countries and regions
