Public Da'wah and Persecution
Going Public
After 3 years of a private message, it was time to go public
The Prophet (SAW) climbed safa hill and called out "SABAHAA!" to everyone in Mecca. This was kind of their battle warning.
The Prophet (SAW) then says the famous quote: "If I were to tell you that a band of horsemen are about to come around the mountain and attack, would you trust me?" They said yes, and the Prophet (SAW) said, "then I warn you of a severe punishment if you don't change your ways"
Abu Lahab cursed the Prophet (SAW), so Allah (SWT) sent down surah Lahab
This was where 3 groups formed:
The believers
The arrogant and rough disbelievers
The casual commoners
Persecution begins
1: Propaganda and smear campaign
Waleed gathered Quraysh to give a name and excuse to Muhammad (SAW).
They had 3 proposals: -->
They all were denied and disproven, and they had no options left
So they decided to call him a sorcerer
1: Psychic/Sorcerer
2: Mentally ill
3: Really good poet
2: Political Pressure on Banu Hashim
Since the propaganda was not working. they came to Abu Talibs house and asked him to do something about it, as he is the uncle of the Prophet (SAW) and the leader of Banu Hashim
Abu Talib asked Muhammad (SAW) to not make things harder than it had to be.
The Prophet (SAW) responded with the famous quote: "My dear uncle, if they were to place the sun on my right hand, and the moon on my left, I will not abandon this cause until Allah grants me victory or until I die trying" Then he broke down into tears
Abu Talib suddenly had a change of heart and refused to do something for Quraysh
3: Pretend Negotiations
Utbah ibn Rabi'ah came to the Quraysh leaders and said told them to take a nicer approach by offering worldly things
So Utbah sat down with the Prophet and asked him if he wanted money, power, women, or anything, and he would give up preaching.
Muhammad (SAW) in response recited the ayahs about the punishment of Aad and Thamud.
Utbah got really scared and put his hand over the Prophet (SAW) mouth
Utbahs face was not the same as it was when he entered
He told Quraysh to leave Muhammad (SAW) alone, he said what he head was big
Quraysh just said they lost another one to his magic
They came up with another option; get rid of the peasants, and they would convert
So Allah (SWT) told the Prophet that if he dares remove the poor, then he would be among the non-believers
This shows Allah (SWT) cares about your heart, not your worldly things
4: Demanding Miracles
They said they tried being reasonable with him, but he is being intolerant
They then asked to move mountains for cultivation, add lakes, and bring back Qusay bin-Kilab and they would convert
Muhammad (SAW) said that this is not what he came for
They asked for an angel to come down and testify, but that was also rejected
They asked why he was chosen, even though he was not rich
Then Abdullah ibn abu Umayyah said that he would only believe if he took a ladder to the heavens and brought a document with 4 angels testifying on his behalf. Then he laughed and said that he will actually never believe. The Prophet (SAW) remembered this even on the conquest of Mecca and did not like Abdullah even then when he converted
The Prophet (SAW) was asked if he wanted the miracles were to be granted, or if he were to cope with the people
He chose to be patient because past societies who had a miracle were destroyed because seeing the unseen is the greatest sign and disbelieving even then would be fatal
5: Verbal and Physical Abuse
The Prophet (SAW) was commanded to recite in a middle way; not to high and not to low
Too high would anger everyone and ruin the day
Too low would mean he is not confident in his massage
This commandment came when the Quraysh cursed and cussed when Quran was heard
They thought an elite should have been a Prophet, they had a huge ego
When revelation had not come for 2-3 days, abu Lahabs wife mocked him by saying "No new material? Your satan must have left you"
So Allah (SWT) revealed surah ad-Duha
One night, a stray dog was under the Prophet's (SAW) bed, and revelation could not come. Jibreel told him that angels do not enter houses with dogs in them
Once, when the Prophet (SAW) was praying, Uqbah ibn Mueet snuck up and started strangling him with a shawl.
Abu Bakr (RA) ran and pushed him off and asked if he would kill someone for believing in Allah alone
Abu Bakr was badly beat and almost died
When he got up he did not eat until he heard if the Prophet (SAW) was ok
6: Turning on his followers
Musab ibn Umayr
Was very rich, setting the standards for fashion
He had a gap sensation despite having so much
He converted after feeling satisfied with a purpose in Islam
He tried to hide it but was caught and put on house arrest as well as shackled
He became so poor he only had a cloth on his body
The Prophet (SAW) cried after seeing Musab before and after Islam. He then told his companions about the luxury they would get in the future and asked them if they would be better then, or now. They said then, and the Prophet (SAW) told them "No. Now"
Martyred in Uhud and they struggled to cover his body, that's how poor he was
A'mmar ibn Yasir and his family
Were targeted because they were vulnerable with no protection
They would strip them of their clothes and lie them on the burning sand
The Prophet (SAW) was devastated and could not do anything so he said "Patience of family of Yasir, your reward will be paradise, we will meet again"
Abu Jahl was torturing them personally and Yasir's mother said some offensive things
She was speared to death and became the first martyr of Islam
Ammar was tortured so much he went insane and said what they wanted him to say
He was so sad and went to the Prophet (SAW)
The Prophet asked him what his hearts position was on Allah and his Messenger, he said content
So the Prophet told him he can say it again if he has to
Khabbab ibn Arat
Suffered the worst torture out of the companions
His master put burning charcoal in him, searing his flesh
On a meeting, Omar (RA) asked him to take off his shirt, everyone gasped at the holes on his back
One day, Khabbab came to the Prophet (SAW) and asked why he did not make dua against them
The Prophet said: "There were people before you who were cut in half by a saw. There were people skinned alive by an iron comb, yet they did not give up. Khabbab you are in a rush of victory. But a time will come when a rider will travel so peacefully that they will have none to fear but Allah"
Bilal ibn abi Rabah
His master was ___
They put him on the steaming sand of Arabia and put a boulder on him so he would not hunch up and protect his back
Umayyah stood over him and yelled at him to give up his faith
Bilal kept saying Ahadun Ahad
Abu Bakr saw this and payed a very high price to save him
Umayyah said "You paid well over the amount he was worth, I thought you were a good businessman"
Abu Bakr said he would pay 10x more if he had to
Bilal wanted to go fight jihad
Abu Bakr said he need Bilal to stay
Bilal then said "If you freed me for yourself, then keep me. If you freed me for Allah, let me go."
So then in his deathbed, he was smiling, happy while everyone else was crying
