How to become a Chartered Accountant in South Africa?
Step 1:
Apply and complete a: BCom in Accountancy / BCom in Accounting / BCom in Accounting Science
The program needs to be completed by an institution that is accredited by SAICA
Examples of institutions: UNISA, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg...
The degree takes 3-4 years to complete
Part-time / Online / Full-time

Step 3:
Enter either into a training contract or be an academic trainee at the insituition you completed your qualifications
After completing both the undergraduate degree and postgraduate one, enter into the world of working
A minimum of 3 years is required
Can take up to 5 years
Complete the Initial Test of Competence
Can be written January and June of every year
Complete the "board course"
Complete at least 20 months in the training contract
Step 2:
Complete a postgraduate program, also by an institution that is accredited by SAICA
Full-time / Online / Part-time
The postgraduate takes 1 to 2 years to complete
Examples of institutions: UNISA, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg...
Step 4:
After step 3, you will need to complete and pass your Assessment of Professional Competence (APC)
This step can be completed every year in the month of November
Step 5:
Complete your remaining months of your training contract
The final step
Register to become a Chartered Accountant (CA(SA))
Register with SAICA
