Definition of the Indigenous Right to Vote: Indigenous people in Canada were restricted from the right to vote in federal elections. They were only allowed to vote if they were enfranchised, a process of giving up their Indian status. Indigenous people were finally given the right to vote in 1960, when Prime Minister John Diefenbaker publicly stated that all citizens of Canada should be allowed to vote federally without conditions, no matter their historical or cultural background. Being granted the right to vote was a massive change for the Indigenous people, as their voices would be recognized in the process, and they could impact the decision of who won the federal election in Canada.
