BOB TOPIC 6 - Angeline Ardythe Katarina Rajagukguk - 2506553534
Trigeminal nerve (topography, branching, function)
Emerges from pons → trigeminal ganglion (middle cranial fossa)
Divides into 3 branches:
V2 Maxillary (sensory)
PSA, MSA, ASA, infraorbital, zygomatic, palatine, nasal branches
V3 Mandibular (mixed)
Motor: masseteric, deep temporal, pterygoid, mylohyoid
Sensory: buccal, auriculotemporal, lingual, inferior alveolar
V1 Ophthalmic (sensory)
Lacrimal, frontal (supraorbital, supratrochlear), nasociliary
Functions
Sensation → face, teeth, oral/nasal mucosa
Motor → mastication
Cranial nerves (classification, types, general function)
12 pairs: CN I–XII
Types
Sensory → I, II, VIII
Motor → III, IV, VI, XI, XII
Mixed → V, VII, IX, X
Fiber types
GSA, GVA, SSA, SVA
GSE, GVE, SVE
General functions
Sensation (smell, vision, taste, hearing, facial/oral sensation)
Motor (eye, face, jaw, tongue, neck)
Parasympathetic to glands/organs
Facial nerve (topography, branching, function)
Exits brainstem (pons) → internal acoustic meatus → facial canal → stylomastoid foramen
Intracranial branches
Greater petrosal → lacrimal, nasal glands
Nerve to stapedius
Chorda tympani → taste ant 2/3 tongue, salivary glands
Extracranial branches
Posterior auricular
Digastric + stylohyoid branches
Parotid plexus → temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, cervical
Functions
Motor → facial expression
Sensory → taste anterior 2/3 tongue
Parasympathetic → lacrimal, submandibular, sublingual glands
Nerves innervating oral cavity + surrounding tissues (maxilla, mandible, tongue, palate)
Maxilla (V2)
PSA → molars + buccal gingiva
MSA → premolars
ASA → incisors + canines
Greater palatine → posterior hard palate
Nasopalatine → anterior hard palate
Mandible (V3)
Inferior alveolar → mandibular teeth → mental nerve (chin, lower lip)
Lingual → anterior 2/3 tongue + FOM
Buccal → buccal gingiva of molars
Motor branches → mastication muscles
Tongue
General sensation → lingual (V3), glossopharyngeal (IX)
Taste → chorda tympani (VII), glossopharyngeal (IX)
Motor → hypoglossal (XII)
Glossopharyngeal, vagus, hypoglossal nerves (topography, branching, function)
Glossopharyngeal (IX)
Exits medulla → jugular foramen
Branches: tympanic, carotid, pharyngeal, tonsillar, lingual
Function → taste + sensation posterior 1/3 tongue, parotid secretion, stylopharyngeus motor
Vagus (X)
Exits medulla → jugular foramen → carotid sheath
Branches: pharyngeal, superior laryngeal, recurrent laryngeal
Function → motor to pharynx/larynx, sensory mucosa, parasympathetic to organs
Hypoglossal (XII)
Exits medulla → hypoglossal canal → tongue
Motor → intrinsic/extrinsic tongue muscles
