Camouflage: Brown plumage is better to camouflage against the brown bark of trees, making brown owls harder to see, compared to gray owls in non-snowy environments.
Warmer climates: winters become warmer and less snowy. The brown morph is becoming more common because it has better survival rates in these conditions.
