- THE PLOT is about the hero's defeat of 3 monsters:
- GRENDEL'S MOTHER DEFEAT: she killed one of the king's men (revenge). Killed by Beowulf ( magic sword).
- DRAGON'S DEFEAT( 50 years later in Geatland). The dragon attacked people- Defeated by King Beowulf, but he died too
- GRENDEL'S DEFEAT: in Denmark the monster terrorises people ( for 12 years)- Beowulf killed him.

- GRENDEL'S MOTHER (no name)- similar to a woman with a poison in her blood to dissolve swords- supernatural lake with sea- dragons
- BEOWULF: the hero - supernatural powers ( fly- live under water- kill monsters- breathe fire)- values: strenght, courage, generosity.
- ORIGINS: unknown composition- perhaps a single author for Christian audience- between 8th/ 11th centuries- the oldest Anglo- Saxon poem.
- STYLE: all features of the classical epic poem
