MCGEOH AND MCDONALD (RI and PI): ppts had a list of 10 words to remember to 100% accuracy before proceeding to the next list. Lists consisted of synonyms, antonyms, unrelated words, consonant syllables, three digit numbers... (different groups).
It was found that the synonymous word list recall produced the worst recall. Demonstrates that interference is stronger when the memories are similar.
Could be due to PI, previous info making new, similar info harder to store, or RI, new info overriding old, similar info.
