Journey of becoming a Chartered Accountant (CA) in South Africa
Academics steps
Obtain a relevant undergraduate degree, such as a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) or Bachelor of Accounting Science, from an accredited Institution.
Pursue a Postgraduate qualification. This is a 1 year course and is often referred to as
Honors degree or a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA)/Certificate in the
Theory of Accounting (CTA).
Professional Steps
Secure a training contract with a SAICA accredited training provider (e.g. audit firm or company). Complete 3 years of practical experience under the supervision of a qualified CA.
Qulaifying Exams
Pass the 1st professional exam, typically the initial Test of Competence (ITC).
This can generally be written after completing the CTA/PGDA.
Pass the 2nd and final professional exam, the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC). This usually requires completion of a professional program and a minimum period of the training contract.
Register with SAICA as a Chartered accountant
GENERAL
Ensure the degree program is accredited by the relevant national accounting body e.g., SAICA (South African Institute of Chartered Accountants)
Engage in continuous professional development. After qualifying you must continue to engage in ongoing learning to maintain your qualification.
