I
They play an unholy amount of 80's rock music.
The Island itself is nothing more than a glorified sandbar ( I say this with love )...One of the primary worries that our charathers face is what's going to happen come hurricane season and wintertime.
The camp is set on the edge of a Beachside Town located on an island off of Long Island, New York. The town itself is very small--It has a small general store, an ice-cream store, a few bars and reastaurants and a ferry. Most Inhabitants don't live on the Island year round, and most houses don't have insulation for the winter.
The children left behind have taken to living full time near to and next to the camp, and formed an autonomous community with its own rules, culture and customs.
Our story is set in a post-apocalyptic World--Since our story is held two months after the iniciating event, the effects are only just beginning to be felt.Stores and locations are beginning to fall into disrepair, there will be no global wi-fi due to the failure of big companies, and the food stores are beginning to deplete--Forcing our main charathers to venture off their island to find more food sources.
Core Beliefs and Values
Teaching everybody with respect : In this hour of need, the only people the camp really have are each other. In order to keep their little shelter up and running, the kids must all work together.
Hope In Desperate Times : The Camp stresses the importance of staying hopeful during trying times.
The Importance of Resilience and Adapting
Tensions and Conflicts
The Longevity of the Camp : The Camp, and by extension the entire Island is only lived on part time, and the architecture reflects this--Many homes don't have the nessecary insulation to live year round, their is no winter gear
Food Sources are in danger : Food on the Island used to be sourced Off-Island--Even with the Camp's members scourging all the food possible on the Island, the older kids are keenly aware that their time is limited before they need to venture off of the island to gather food.
Fear of the Unknown : The Islanders haven't been in contact with people since the Global Internet powers stopped working, so they have no Idea of who, or what will be waiting for them once they step off of the island.
The campers are beginning to feel the pressure of the short-term longevity of their island, and this is starting to cause tensions around the camp.
Fear of Death : The Older Members of the Camp face the fact that the age-groups above them have already dissapeared--and that they might be next.
Weather Concerns : Natural Disasters ( Like Hurricanes ) are approaching and the members have little to no Idea on how to prepare.
Just where excatly have all the adults dissapeared to ?
Central Focus ( Core themes )
The Danger of Complacency : Even though our charathers are reluctant to step off their island, they must to ensure their survival.
Resilience : Although our charathers experienced hardships, they never give up, and they never give up their dream for a better world,
The Loss of Innocence : The responsibilities of adults were suddenly thrust onto the children, and how it weights on them in different ways.
The power of Friendship : Humanity's best traits prevail amongst disaster.
Cultural logic ( Why they have managed to beat the odds )
Previous establishing of Identity ( Already being registered into the camp ) established some sort of familiarity within the in group making it easier for the society to build together.
Children have a naturally more upbeat perspective on life, and less tension and reservations about working together that teenagers and adults have with working each other.
The presence of Older Children has established a concrete system of order, ensuring the survival of the community on the Island,
Plot ( In progress )
Symbols, Language and Rituals
The Campers have taken to create their own individual fashions ( Tye-Dying their Camp Shirts, Wearing pony beads In their hair, Rainbow Loom Jewelery...)
The camp's original purpose as an ocean sports camp is still obvious--Tanlines, Swimsuits, Goggles and other beach related accessories are a part of everyday wear.
The Camp's main language is English, but since participants come from different parts of the states of the world, other languages and accents can be heard.
Outside of daily occurences, the camp stresses unity during these times.Everyone eats together in the mess-hall, team-building are still a common occurence, as well as weekly bonfires and beach days. These exercises keep camper morale high and helps them not lose hope.
