Chapter 4
Going Public
After three years of private da'wah, the Prophet is commanded to begin preaching to the public.
The Prophet goes on mount Safa and calls the entire tribe of Quraysh.
He gives the famous speech that we all know today, giving them the message of Islam and the consequences if you reject.
After the speech Abu Lahab curses him, and it cursed by Allah is Surah Lahab.
Persecution Begins: Propaganda and Smear Campaign
Abu Jahl calls the Quraysh and tells then that they need to do something in order to keep their power, and also because the Prophet is "disrespecting our way of life".
Abu Jahl wants to get a narrative straight before the Hujjaj come
They all gave Waleed proposals, such as that he was insane, a sahir, and a poet, but none of those could really stick. So, Waleed pondered and pondered until they just decided to call him a magician because he separates families.
He doesn't want contradictions.
He spins a story to fit his POV.
Persecution Begins: Political Pressure on Banu Hashim
The pagans decide to try something else, so they try to convince the Prophet to stop preaching through Abu Talib.
When the Prophet sees that his uncle's support might be wavering, he gets emotional and tells him that if they put the sun in my right and the moon in my left, I wouldn't give up this message.
This melts Abu Talib's heart, and he affirms his support for the Prophet(SAW)
Look at the Love the Prophet has for his uncle, and look at his resolve!
Abu Talib is the chief.
Persecution Begins: Pretend Negotiations
Now the Quraysh try some outrageous negotiations.
They send Utbah, who tries to offer women, power, wealth, and even medical assistance to the Prophet(astaghfirullah).
After he's done talking, the Prophet starts to recite Surah Fussilat in such an aweing way that Utbah begs him to stop when he reaches the ayat about Ad and Thamud.
Utbah goes back, visibly changed to the point where everyone else notices, and he tells the Quraysh to leave the Prophet alone, as if he wins it's their win, and if he loses, then they are releived.
The Prophet doesn't get mad at Utbah, or even interrupt him when he literally calls him insane.
Preferential treatment
The Quraysh tell the Prophet that if he abandons the low class people that follow him, then they will take his message more seriously.
The Prophet begins to think about it, as the elites would bring their entire tribe with them to Islam.
However, Allah stays loyal to those who are loyal to him, and tells the Prophet to never abandon those who are calling to Him.
Persecution Begins: Demanding Miracles.
They now begin to demand outrageous miracles such as to move the mountains to create farmland, or to give them rivers.
However, this was not what the Prophet was sent for, to perform tricks at a moments whim.
Prophet doesn't give in to their demands.
Allah's policy on miracles
Either you accept right after the miracle happens OR you get destroyed
Why? Because it's disprespectful, you've already seen miracles such as the Quran, and because there are just some points where you have no chance for tawbah or to go back.
You can also just not get a miracle to get more time, which is what the Prophet chose because he loves his Ummah.
Persecution Begins: Verbal and Physical Abuse(We did not cover a lot of this)
The Quraysh are now taking a more "hands on" approach to the message, astaghfirullah!
They will annoy and use atrocious language with the Prophet when he is reciting the Quran.
This is why Allah tells him to not recite too loud nor too quiet but something in between. We want to show our identity but not be annoying about it.
They also ridicule him, like when Umm Jameel said, "Has you're Shaitan left you?" when the revelation had stopped for a few days.
So Allah(swt) sent Surah Duha
They also threw the intestines of a camel on the Prophet(SAW)
They also resorted to torturing some of the companions, such as Ammar and his family, Bilal, and Khabbab
